FERS annuity eligibility after being fired
Many people ask the question: If you are removed from your position immediately as a result of a disciplinary issue and eligible to retire, will you be able to get your annuity since you were let go?
The answer can be complicated, but we can simplify it for you: As long as you have met your eligibility for retirement under civil service retirement system or federal employee retirement system, you can retire and receive your annuity, If you were fired within the last 30 days, you would contact your agency for assistance with the retirement process. If it’s been more than 30 days since your separation, you have to contact OPM directly for assistance.
There are some exceptions that you might have to forfeit that annuity, may be part of it or all of it--If it is treason or anything against national security of the United States you will not get an annuity. If it’s just for things such as unacceptable performance or not coming into work regularly, AWOL, you are guaranteed that you will be receiving your retirement annuity. Contact OPM or your agency for more information. You can read their information on this topic here: Fired FERS Employees.
